Surf Glossary – Essential Terms for Beginners in Cascais

If you’re looking for surf lessons in Cascais or just starting out in surfing, you’ll quickly hear some new words in the water. At our surf school in Cascais, we explain everything step by step, but here’s a glossary of key surfing terms to help you start with confidence.

Line-up

The area in the water where surfers wait for waves. In your first surf lessons in Cascais, you’ll learn how to position yourself safely in the line-up.

Set

A group of waves coming in sequence, usually larger and more organized.

Offshore

Wind blowing from the land toward the sea. Ideal for surfing in Cascais because it keeps waves clean and well-shaped.

Onshore

Wind blowing from the sea toward the land. It can make the water choppy and the waves less defined.

Inside

The area closer to the shore, where waves have already broken. Most beginners start practicing here during their first surf classes in Lisbon or Cascais.

Outside

The area farther from the shore where waves begin to form before breaking.

Paddling

The motion of using your arms to move forward and catch a wave. It’s one of the first things you’ll work on in any group surf lesson.

Take-off

The exciting moment when you go from lying down to standing on your board. A key skill taught in beginner surf lessons.

Goofy

A surfer who rides with their right foot forward.

Regular

A surfer who rides with their left foot forward.

Drop

The first descent down the wave after your take-off.

Bottom Turn

The first turn at the base of the wave, helping you gain speed and control. Once you’ve nailed the take-off, this is the next milestone, something our instructors focus on in private surf lessons.

Cutback

A turn that brings the surfer back toward the strongest part of the wave.

White Water

The foamy, broken part of a wave. Beginners often practice standing up here first. It’s the ideal starting point at any of our surf schools near Lisbon.

Softboard

A foam-topped board, more stable and safe, perfect for beginners learning to surf in Cascais. All our surf rentals include quality softboards adapted to your level.

Longboard

A bigger, stable board, ideal for small waves and beginners. Available in our surf rentals in Lisbon and Cascais.

Leash

A cord that attaches your ankle to the board, keeping you safe in the water. Non-negotiable in every session, whether you’re joining a surf camp or a single lesson.

Peak

The part of the wave where it first breaks. The surfer closest to the peak usually has priority.

Priority

Surfing rule that determines who has the right of way on a wave. Following priority ensures safety and respect in the water, something we cover in every session, from surf lessons in Sintra to surf lessons in Cascais.
