What to expect from your first surf lesson in Cascais

Booking your first surf lesson can feel exciting, intimidating and slightly chaotic all at once. Most beginners arrive with the same questions:

  • “What if I can’t stand up?”
  • “Do I need to be fit?”
  • “What if the waves are too big?”
  • “Will I look ridiculous?”

The short answer? You don’t need experience, balance or “surfer skills” to start. You just need to show up ready to have fun.

At Salty Souls Portugal, we teach complete beginners every week across Cascais beaches like Carcavelos and Guincho. Here’s exactly what your first surf lesson will look like.

First things first: you don’t need experience

Most people taking their first surf lesson have never touched a surfboard before. That’s completely normal. Your instructors will guide you through everything step by step, from carrying the board to standing up for the first time.

The goal of your first lesson is not perfection. It’s getting comfortable in the ocean, learning the basics safely and enjoying the experience.

Meeting point and equipment setup

Your lesson starts on the beach. Your instructor will help you choose the right equipment based on your height, weight, experience level and the surf conditions that day.

Most beginners use a softboard – larger, more stable and easier to paddle than smaller performance boards. You’ll also receive a wetsuit suited to the water temperature. See our surf rentals in Cascais if you want to hire equipment separately.

Learning the basics on the sand

Before entering the water, you’ll spend time on the beach learning the fundamentals. No complicated surf jargon, just clear guidance. You’ll cover:

  • How to lie on the board and paddle correctly
  • How to stand up (the pop-up)
  • Basic surf safety and ocean awareness
  • How to enter and exit the water
  • How to read incoming waves

Entering the water for the first time

This is the moment everyone remembers. Beginners start in smaller white-water waves close to shore, where you can practise balance and timing safely. Your instructor stays nearby at all times, helping you position the board, catch waves, improve your pop-up and stay safe in the water.

And yes, falling is part of surfing. Everyone falls. Usually a lot.

Will you stand up during your first lesson?

Many beginners manage to stand up during their first session. Some do it several times. Others need more time. Both are completely normal.

Surfing depends on timing, balance, ocean conditions and confidence. Progress looks different for everyone. The important thing is enjoying the process. Most people leave their first lesson tired, salty and already wanting another session.

      What beginners usually struggle with

A few things catch almost everyone off guard:

        Nose-diving (pearling)

Usually means you’re leaning too far forward. Your instructor will spot and fix this quickly.

Falling sideways as soon as you stand

Keep your arms wide and loose for balance. Think tightrope walker, not soldier.

        Feeling more tired than expected

Paddling uses muscles you don’t normally use. It’s completely normal to feel wrecked after your first session. It gets easier quickly.

Why Cascais is one of the best places to learn surfing

Cascais sits on the western edge of the Lisbon coast, where the Atlantic produces consistent, manageable waves year-round. Multiple beaches nearby work in different conditions. If one spot is too windy or powerful, we move the lesson somewhere safer.

Some of the best beginner beaches near Cascais:

        • Carcavelos – consistent waves, great for beginners year-round
        • Guincho – ideal on smaller, cleaner days
        • São Pedro do Estoril
        • Costa da Caparica

It’s also just 30 minutes from Lisbon, a very easy half-day trip. Read more in our
complete guide to surfing near Lisbon.

What to bring to your surf lesson

You really don’t need much. We recommend arriving already wearing your swimwear underneath your clothes.

          • Swimwear
          • Towel
          • Sunscreen (water-resistant)
          • Water bottle
          • Comfortable clothes for after
          • Flip-flops for the beach

Wetsuits and all surfing equipment are provided. You don’t need to bring anything related to surfing itself.

            Is surfing physically difficult?

Beginner lessons are adapted to your level. You do not need to be an athlete. If you can swim and feel comfortable in the water, you can absolutely learn to surf. Your first lesson is more about coordination, timing and having fun than intense physical performance.

            Private vs group surf lessons

Both options work well for beginners.

            Group lessons

Great for friends, solo travellers, families and budget-friendly experiences. Social, relaxed and full of energy.

            Private lessons

Ideal if you want faster progression, feel nervous, prefer one-to-one coaching or have already tried surfing before. Private coaching lets instructors focus entirely on your technique and confidence.

Ready for your first surf session?

Your first surf lesson isn’t about surfing perfectly. It’s about stepping into the ocean, trying something new and experiencing the energy of the Atlantic coast.

Some people catch one wave and become obsessed for life. Others simply leave with a huge smile and a great memory from their time in Portugal. Either way, we’ll make sure you feel welcome in the water.
